You can have a site with 50,000 back links of unrelated low quality sites and it can be out ranked by a site with 10 high quality relevant links.

More on actual link building techniques on future postings but for now, the key is to be very careful and selective in which sites you are ready and willing to link to. Do make exceptions to this rule when the low page ranking sites are providing solid high quality information. So content quality is another factor to consider. Not everything should always be about getting higher page rankings (this is just too closed-minded).
