These instructions for getting back your missing “Volume Icon” in the system tray worked for me and I hope they work for you too!
Easy Steps to restore your missing volume icon in the system tray:
1. Right mouse click on system tray and select Properties.
2. Click on Notification Area tab.
3. Under System Icons, make sure VOLUME is checked and click OK.
If that isn’t the problem you will need to perform the following more advanced steps. Pleae be careful here as if you screw something up, you can hose your registry and have bigger problems.
Advanced steps (only if necessary) to restore your missing volume icon in the system tray:
4. Click the Start Menu and type in the start search “regedit” (Registry Editor)
5. Place highlight on the computer at the top and then click on Edit, then Find “iconstreams”
6. Delete all registry keys with names “IconStreams” and “PastIconStreams” until “iconstreams” can no longer be found in the registry
7. To find additional occurrences press F3.
8. Restart Windows Vista
9. You may need to do steps 1, 2 and 3 again. :)
Note: When I did this I only found the names located here:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
