JDHL on Meta Tags

Updated March 30, 2007

Below you will find JDHL Technologies views on Meta Tags.

Meta tags are a bit confusing and often used incorrectly on many websites.

A meta tag is a snippet of code located between the <HEAD> </HEAD> tags in an HTML document.

Meta tags are not used as much to today by search engines because of the over use by spammers trying to fool the search engines into generating unrelated traffic to their sites.

After researching meta tags we recommend the following meta tags for most situations. As always there may be exceptions.

Recommended to use:
<title>test</title> Not a meta tag but critical
<meta name="description" content="test">
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

Optional Group:
<meta name="author" content="test">
<meta name="designer" content="test">
<meta name="keywords" content="test">
<meta name="robots" content="noodp">
<meta name="robots" content="noydir">

Meta tags specific for Google and Yahoo can be used but thoroughly understand their purpose before applying.
